Homework Philosophy:
It is important to build good habits even as early as first grade. We work hard at remembering to bring our folder back and forth each day even if it's empty! It is helpful if you have a consistent routine, which will help your child establish good skills important for later in their school career.
Reading Homework:
Please make sure your child is reading each night for about 15-20 minutes. They should be reading books at their independent reading level (books they can read all by themselves). During the first half of the year while these books are short, please have them read the book multiple times (to you, to themselves, to a younger sibling, to the dog, etc.)- the more the better! It is also important to read to your child each night and discuss books that are at higher levels than they can read on their own!

Math Homework:
Math homework will not come home nightly. I will let you know the skills we are working on through our newsletter. Please reinforce your child's math skills by working on these while making dinner, driving in the car, etc. Children should be practicing counting forwards and backwards by 1s, as well as counting by 5s and 10s. They should also be working on their mental math by doing simple addition and subtraction problems up to 10. Games are a great way to reinforce math skills and concepts. Math games: Chutes and Ladders, Top it, Tenzi, Sorry, Uno...

Word Wall Words/Snap Words:
We will be practicing spelling words in class that are common sight words (I, me, the, was, they, etc.). We will be calling these snap words! A list of these words can be found on another tab on this site. These words can be written on wipe off boards, on index cards to play memory, used in tic-tac-toe (instead of Xs and Os), written in different color markers, etc.
